SUMMARY

Recognizing the properties of arithmetic operations is one of the goals mentioned in the Basic Education Mathematics program. We present examples of verbal problems, through which students arrive at the generalization of some of these properties. At the most elementary levels of education, proving the falsehood of a given property, namely through counterexamples, is more accessible than proving its truth. Taking advantage of the theme of the properties of operations, we present examples of conjectures that can be tested by students and that turn out to be, some of them, false.
