Recreational Mathematics Magazine

Journal of Elementary Mathematics

JME was founded on November 1, 1883; it was a completely handwritten newspaper, containing only problems from the so-called branches of elementary mathematics (arithmetic, geometry, algebra, trigonometry), some solved, others to be solved by the readers; it is not known who its author(s) were; it came out fortnightly on the 1st and 15th of each month, but it had a short existence. From those distant times, issues no. 1, 5 and 9 exist. As its Director and Owner for many years, Dr. Sérgio Macias Marques, tells us, Mathematics Gazette in 2004, “I was assigned as a Mathematics Teacher at the Lisbon Primary School; a paper on “Dimensions in Geometry” led me to a “Mathematics Gazette” (No. 17); in this, another article caught my attention, “A Forgotten Portuguese Newspaper” by Aniceto Monteiro. Written in the 1940s, this article gave a history of the JME and the author issued a challenge, which I accepted. And the first (No. 10) – as I continued the numbering – came out precisely a century after the interruption in those distant times […]”

Jorge Nuno Silva was Director of JME between 2009 and 2013.
