SUMMARY
Problem solving, along with mathematical reasoning and communication, is a transversal skill that should not be developed in isolation. Thus, problem solving can be the basis for approaching various mathematical topics, making them more interesting and motivating in the classroom. In particular, problem solving can be used to explore the topic of Data Organization and Processing [OTD]. This article presents a study carried out in a mixed class of 1st and 4th graders, from the 1st cycle of Basic Education, in which the aim was to develop an approach to the topic of OTD through the resolution of problems contextualized in real situations. The qualitative research was based on the Action Research methodology and was developed in nine sessions held in context.
The data obtained demonstrate that the problematic situations based on everyday life offered students an effective understanding of the purposes of the various tools related to the topic, provided for each level of education, since, at the end of the study, students were able to identify, build and interpret OTD tools.
