SUMMARY
Access to education for deaf people is today an inalienable right of this population, within the framework of a “school for all”, advocated by several international documents (Jomtien Declaration, 1990; Salamanca Declaration, 1994) and national documents (SE Basic Law, 1986; DL nº3/2008, among others).

Decree-Law 3/2008 states, in its introductory lines, that “the promotion of a democratic and inclusive school, geared towards the educational success of all children and young people” is a necessary condition for “improving the quality of education”. This decree has as its basic principle that profoundly deaf children and young people should learn at school through their mother tongue, Portuguese Sign Language.

In this sense, it is important to reflect on the transmission of knowledge and pedagogical methodologies of the subject of Mathematics through Portuguese Sign Language (LGP). What are the difficulties faced by deaf students? What difficulties do Mathematics teachers face in teaching the deaf? What is being done in this area at a school dedicated to teaching the deaf – CED Jacob Rodrigues Pereira?
