Addition and subtraction calculation strategies based on the decimal nature of the numbering system: explorations in the 2nd year of schooling

SUMMARY

The authors analyze addition and subtraction calculation strategies based on the decimal nature of the numbering system, including the necessary prerequisites. These dynamics were implemented in public schools in the Azores, between September 2015 and July 2021, in the context of the Prof DA Project of the “ProSucesso-Açores pela Educação” Program, of the Government of the Azores, and the “Mathematics Step by Step” Workshop, of the University of the Azores.
