Problem solving in the 2nd year of schooling: a learning sequence of the bar model

SUMMARY

This article presents a proposal for a first sequence of work with the bar model, in the context of problem solving in the 2nd year of schooling. This learning sequence was implemented by the Coordination Team of the Guide to Support the Action of the Mathematics Teacher in a 2nd year class belonging to the EBI of Praia da Vitória, Terceira Island - Azores. The work developed throughout the 2016/17 school year was part of the workshop Mathematics Step by Step: Strategies for Overcoming Difficulties for the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, of the University of the Azores, and of the Prof DA project of the ProSucesso program - Azores for Education, of the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture of the Government of the Azores.
