Mathematics 365 — The Mathematics of The Lusiads

This Activity is part of the Mathematics 365 program that presents mathematics as a fundamental pillar of society. With Carlos Perreira dos Santos Day 03/19/2025 at 11:00 Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7237413992 Summary: The Portuguese epic poem The Lusiads is uniquely rich in various areas of knowledge (history, geography, astronomy, mythology, classical literature, among others) and Luís de Camões (1524-1579) intertwines them all with remarkable technique and elegance. Luciano Pereira da Silva (1864-1926), mathematician and professor at Coimbra, studied the work in detail from the point of view of the use, often veiled, of such knowledge. Based fundamentally on Pereira da Silva's study, this work aims to make an alternative dissemination of the astronomy present in The Lusiads. This presentation is based on the journey itself described in the poem, rather than being organized by astronomical themes as Pereira da Silva did. The online version of this work includes videos and dynamic diagrams of the skies of 1497-1498, as well as a...

CIUHCT Conference

CIUHCT Conference Abstract: If Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) had not written Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, he would probably be remembered as a pioneering photographer – and also as a mathematician. But what mathematics was he interested in – and how good was he? In this lecture I summarize his life and mathematical works in the context of Victorian Oxford. Biography: Robin Wilson is Emeritus Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Open University, Emeritus Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, London, and a former Fellow of Keble College, University of Oxford. A past president of the British Society for the History of Mathematics, he has written and edited over 50 books on the history of mathematics and its history (including Lewis Carroll on Numberland & Euler's Pioneering Equation) and specifically on graph theory (including Introduction to Graph Theory and Four Colours Are Enough). Involved in the popularization and communication of mathematics and its history, he has received awards from the Mathematical Association of America for his “outstanding expository writing”, and the Stanton Medal from the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications for his outreach activities in combinatorics. He has received two honorary doctorates and holds Erdős Number 1. Robin Wilson has been a member of the Ludus Association since 2017. See the official website of the event...

Combinatorial Game Theory Colloquium III (Lisbon, 22-24 January, 2019) Combinatorial Game Theory (CGT) is a branch of mathematics that studies sequential games with perfect information. Combinatorial games include well-known rulesets like Amazons, Clobber, Domineering, Hackenbush, Konane, Nim, Octal Games, Wythoff's Nim. After John Conway's On Numbers and Games (1976), Elwyn Berlekamp, John Conway, and Richard Guy published “the book” Winning Ways (1982). In that work, one can find a unified mathematical theory capable of analyzing a large class of rulesets. The books Lessons in Play (2007), by Michael Albert, David Wolfe, and Richard Nowakowski, and Combinatorial Game Theory (2013), by Aaron Siegel, are also mandatory reading. BGSC IV FRIBOURG 2001 Abstracts International ColloquiumApril 17-21, 2001,University of Fribourg (Switzerland) Jeroen Donkers, Jos Uiterwijk, Univ. Maastricht & Alex de Voogt, Univ. Leiden (Netherlands) Mancala Games The large group of Mancala games offer many possibilities for academic research. In the field of game history, Mancala games have been studied because of their enormous geographical spread and the large diversity in boards and game rules. The goal of our talk is to present some of the research in various other directions that has been done by us, but mainly by others. In the field of psychology, Mancala games play a special role among other board games. The effect of a single move can be so large that it becomes incalculable for humans, especially when multiple leaps of sowing are allowed. The way in which players cope with this has been studied in the game of Dakon. Mancala games are also of interest to mathematicians. Some Mancala games have special properties like the existence of infinite move sequences in Bao. Mathematical research has also been performed on solitaire Mancala games, leading into the series of Tchoukaillon positions. Finally, Mancala games have been studied early in the field of Artificial Intelligence as a model of human reasoning, but they are still subject of research in computer games. Kalah has recently been solved and Awari is bound to be solved very soon. N'Guessan...

Today this meeting is known as the Board Game Studies Colloquium and, in 2023 celebrated its 25th meeting in Ephesus. For some people, like most professional mathematicians, Mathematics is lots of fun; but for others, like some students, Mathematics can be a nightmare. Historically, we know that some mathematical research areas are deeply linked to puzzles and games — probability and chance games, graph theory and the Brigdes of Königsberg come to mind. The University of Évora, the Ludus Association, the Museum of Science of the University of Lisbon, the Portuguese Mathematical Society and the Center of History of Science of the University of Lisbon will organize the Recreational Mathematics Colloquium I. The University of Évora...

CGTC IV

Combinatorial Game Theory Colloquium IV (Lisbon, 23-25 January, 2023) Combinatorial Game Theory (CGT) is a branch of mathematics that studies sequential games with perfect information. Combinatorial Game Theory Colloquia is held every two years, in Portugal. Ludus Association will organize in S. Miguel, Azores, the fourth edition of the...
