Summary:

The Portuguese epic poem The Lusiads is uniquely rich in various areas of knowledge (history, geography, astronomy, mythology, classical literature, among others) and Luís de Camões (1524-1579) intertwines them all with remarkable technique and elegance. Luciano Pereira da Silva (1864-1926), a mathematician and professor at Coimbra, studied the work in detail from the point of view of the often veiled use of such knowledge. Based fundamentally on Pereira da Silva's study, this work aims to provide an alternative dissemination of the astronomy present in The Lusiads. This presentation is guided by the voyage itself recounted in the poem, instead of being organized by astronomical themes as Pereira da Silva did. The online version of this work includes videos and dynamic diagrams respecting the skies of 1497-1498, as well as a sound component.
